The Website Promotion Checklist

Website promotion used to be easy. In the past all you had to do was use descriptive words in your meta tags, and submit your website to search engines. That was it! Unfortunately, website promotion has become a lot more complex. It is no wonder that website promotion has become a profession with titles, such as search engine optimization consultant, or web marketing specialist.

Fortunately, a do-it-yourselfer can accomplish much of what a professional would.

Use the checklist below to start promoting your website today.

  1. First and foremost, build a strong business foundation by creating a business plan with goals, and by identifying your ideal client.

  2. Brand your business with a logo, slogan, and specific colors. Branding creates awareness. Use your brand logo, slogan, and colors on your website and on all correspondence.

  3. Build trust by creating a secure website with a privacy policy. Trust is also established by providing outstanding customer service.

  4. Offer an opt-in subscription service to your e-zine, e-newsletter, or rss feed of a regularly updated blog.

  5. Include a site map to benefit site visitors and your search engine results. Site maps enable search engines to index each page of your website.

  6. Make your website search engine friendly by using a relevant title that includes keywords from the web page.

  7. Use meta tags, but don’t overdo it. Keyword spamming will work against you and actually lower your rank. Stick to around a dozen or so prioritized keywords for optimum results.

  8. Use keywords in the content of each web page. They are especially useful in the beginning of sentences in the first half of each page.

  9. Instead of using one specific keyword for each page, use several with some key phrases.

  10. Use header tags on every web page. Search engines use the text of headers to determine the topic of the content.

  11. Submit your website to as many search engines as you can find; otherwise, no one will find you.

  12. Check all of your website’s links on a regular basis to ensure they are working properly. You can do this manually or with a free link checker online.

  13. Test your website in different browsers at different resolutions to ensure that each page looks the way that you intended it to look. Web programming, especially scripts, can cause a page to render differently in different browsers.

  14. Include a forum or blog on your website to interact with current and potential clients. Chatting with clients is a great way to build a strong relationship.

  15. Promote your website with a monthly or occasional contest. Be sure to announce the winner on your website.

  16. Add a quiz or poll to your website. Web users enjoy interactive content.

  17. Write informative, interesting articles with links to your site, and submit them to article banks.

  18. Run promotions on a regular basis, but be sure to change the products and sale prices to keep the sales effective. If a product is always on sale, then it really isn’t a deal.

  19. Implement online marketing activities, such as pay per click (ppc) ads that enable you to run ads on other websites.

  20. Last but not least, promote your website by issuing a press release on your blog, to the media, and to everyone you know. Press releases work well for any major announcements including launches, partnerships, and other considerable changes.

Website promotion is paramount to the success of your business. Promotion is what enables your ideal clients to find you. Start checking off points on your list today.
